The exhibition Scampia – Something Went Wrong”, as part of the 12th edition of the PHOTO IS:RAEL Festival, presents a series of photographs taken by the Italian photographer Massimo Pellone starting in 2017, dedicated to the Scampia neighborhood on the outskirts of Naples.

The project is a non-rhetorical homage to the soul of the neighborhood, to the sense of belonging of those who live there, and to the complex humanity that runs through it.

In the images, Pellone reveals the intimate and daily lives of Scampia’s inhabitants, against the backdrop of a forgotten urban landscape, grappling with the ghosts of its past and the search for a new identity.

His photographs capture simple moments – a discussion between a couple around the kitchen table, children playing, a mother’s kiss to her child. Between cracked walls, warmth and intimacy emerge; women struggling for their livelihood, young people seeking their path, and elderly people carrying the traces of their past on their bodies. In Scampia, life is continuously discovered: fragile, exposed, full of humanity.

Massimo Pellone is a finalist for the prestigious Meitar Award for Excellence in Photography, awarded annually to a body of work demonstrating excellence in the field of photography. The winner of the award will be announced during the Festival.

The exhibition is curated by Svetlana Reingold
