EPOS is the only film festival in Israel dedicated exclusively to art cinema. Hosted by the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the Tel Aviv Cinematheque, the Festival presents works from Israel and around the world, including documentaries, fiction films, animations and experimental productions, spanning a wide range of artistic disciplines: visual arts, sculpture, photography, cinema, design, architecture, fashion, theatre, poetry, literature, music and dance.
The film
Caravaggio‘s life was as turbulent and dramatic as the paintings he left behind. Driven by the tension between the sacred and the profane, the artist depicted biblical figures with unprecedented realism, giving sacred characters the faces and humanity of ordinary people. A bold and innovative choice, which often brought him into conflict with the Catholic Church.
The film explores the deep connection between the artist’s life and his work: an existence marked by violent brawls, accusations of murder, and a death still shrouded in mystery.
Part of the Exhibition on Screen series, the film conveys the full power of Caravaggio’s paintings through close-up details of his works, highlighting the revolutionary use of light and shadow that defines his style. Testimonies from art historians are interwoven with dramatizations of his life, building the portrait of an artist with a restless personality and a deeply innovative vision.
