On the occasion of the 13th edition of the PHOTO IS:RAEL international photography festival, the Italian Cultural Institute of Tel Aviv presents the exhibition “Citizens of a Collapsed Dream” by Massimo Pellone, winner of the Meitar Award for Excellence in Photography 2025 at last year’s edition, a prestigious recognition of research and excellence in contemporary photography.
The exhibition offers a selection of images from the ongoing photographic project Scampia – Something Went Wrong, through which Pellone investigates the relationship between a utopian architectural vision, transformed over time, and the complexity of the human experience lived within it.
Located on the northern outskirts of Naples, the Scampia neighborhood was born in the 1960s and 1970s as an ambitious public housing project inspired by the principles of modernism. Over the decades, it has become an emblem of the contradictions of that urban planning vision and of the social difficulties that have marked its history. This legacy emerges both in the deterioration of the architectural structures and in the fragility of a context where promises of redemption and inclusion have remained partly unfulfilled.
With an attentive and respectful gaze, Pellone portrays the residents of Scampia among graffiti and fragmented architecture. The subjects look directly into the lens and claim their individuality. Gestures of care and affection tell of their daily lives.
